The Seventh Gate: IIM Shillong
The Hindu Business Line reports:
Sixty CAT-qualified students began their academic courses in the country’s seventh IIM which was formally inaugurated in Shillong on Friday.
The ace business school, christened as the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RGIIM), began its maiden academic session at the temporary Mayurbhanj Complex of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU). Work will soon begin on a 120-acre site fo r the permanent campus of the IIM.
The institute offers the Post Graduate Programme in management, which is a two year full time residential programme for graduate students from all disciplines.
Among such funfare, it remains to be seen, how far and for how high the institution spurs, for the chasm between the leading and lagging is huge and the circumstances demanding. I am incidentally remembered about yet another experiment with its cousin in similar circumstances. The experiment though is yet to show any tangible result!
Having IIT, the nation’s premier engineering college being opened in Guwahati sometime in mid of the last decade, was a welcome news for the region. It is yet to make it to the top 15 engineering colleges in India. Surprising isn’t it?
The problem is not with the stamp of IIT… I guess. I believe the problem is of real good teaching staff and the lack of proper environment to pursue scientific pursuits unhindered.Although, Assam till a few years had the dubious distiction of being a hotbed of extremism, it is not surprising that few quality people have tried to make Assam their home, in the peak of their career, yet thats not the point [Note to self: Talk about it someday!]
Scientific pursuits,as we know, that it takes a lot of hard cash. And unfortunately that[the scientific pursuit] is the least of India’s worries. It is no surprise that, today we are seeing more of software coders than code hackers. Taking a severe toll on the Indian prospect of etching a booming tech-SMB story in our backyard.

perhaps let me say IIT and IIM are two different worlds. about teaching and staff the kick has been great and nevertheless students are all set to make there presence felt pretty soon
Of course Saahil… of course…
It will be a great news for the region if, this thing takes wings…All the best
