Atlas Shrugged or Das Kapital?

April 19, 2009

In these times of crisis, human history’s two of the most iconic books propagating the most varied and different philosophy on human life and its happiness, are once again sparring their way out.

Atlas Shrugged and Das Kapital, books extolling the virtues of capitalism and communism are getting all the attention once again.

Google ZeitGeist has thrown some interesting results

Atlas Shrugged and Das Kapital

In these times of crisis, seemingly Atlas Shrugged is winning hands down over Das Kapital. And much of the electronic media is going gaga over the increasing popularity of Atlas Shrugged.

Even Ayn Rand’s masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged has risen to the list of Top 100 books of Amazon. Interesting, but is it enough to conclude or say, capitalism is the way to go forward, just yet?

The Right Wingers are once again at ‘it’ talking about how, this very result and the soaring popularity of Atlas Shrugged has attracted people to the very hard core capitalism and not the pseudo-capitalism which we have deteriorated in usage {Although they are visibly and obviously ruffled by Ayn Rand’s Objective Philosophy}

Yet, a disclosure is in offing before I draw any conclusions: I am a Capitalist.

Now the closure of this article is:

  • Mere Google  Search Volume doesn’t tell anything about it. Consider the precense of spikes in blue line. The reason for that spike was Angeline Jolie. Stunned? Yes, apparently in 2006, Brangelina were supposed to star in Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.Hence the new found fascination. The point made : The searches has enough and more spurious results than we might be ready to attribute.
  • A better result or metric of popularity can be, the number of books sold on Amazon of both titles. This will actually reflect the true measure of people who did choose to bite the bullet, rather than have a cursory glance on the other, reflecting in their searches.
  • Or possibly, the average amount of time, a person browses the Atlas Shrugged entry in Wikipedia, compared the that of Das Kapital.
  • In effect, mere search entry volume reflects nada. And indeed, we can’t say directly from this too, since the graph is showing the searches since mid 2003. That 51/2 years of search entry volume spreading over 365 days. Not enough! It gives rise to around 2000 days. It is not enough, to conclude that even these search results are authoritative as they might be part of a large random walk, mean reverting process.

Hence, at the end of it, what might be playing is the law of small numbers winning over the humans. And yes, btw, India and US have registered the highest proportion of Ayn Rand vs Karl Marx searches.

    One can observe this trend in India. Visit Ayn Rand in India initiative at
    More importantly for India, in my opinion, is the scale of pirated copies of Ayn Rand’s books available in India. No one produces pirated copies of a book, if there is no demand!
    The capitalists need to come out of the woodwork!
